From myth to vision and technological breakthrough, the history of flight has transitioned from “heavier than air” powered aircraft (Wilbur and Orville Wright, 1903) to faster than sound (Charles “Chuck” Yeager, 1947) in a relatively short time in the first half on last century.
But the quest for “faster” hypersonic flight has never relented although at a slower pace. Even planning for further exploration of the universe, the ambition to reduce distances on our globe remains. Confidence is building on the ability to overcome current limitations to achieve a sustained trans-atmospheric hypersonic flight, both for reducing antipodal flight time on earth as well as space activity costs. A new impulse is being given by technological advancement in materiel and propulsion systems with larger private involvement in parallel with the leading activity of the defense industry.
